Sports massage is designed to aid recovery from training and/or injury. It is a treatment which helps to alleviate the stress and tension that has built up during physical exercise and is stored in the body’s tissues. The layers of the muscle tissue are massaged using various techniques which assist in the removal of lactic acid and helps to treat soft tissue injuries.
Soft tissue injuries are where tissue cells within fibres are put under stress such as overload, emotional, occupational and postural. These fibres are then repaired by scar tissue. The fibres can then become stuck together (adhesions – referred to as knots) which causes muscle function to become impaired leading to imbalance and sometimes pain. If the injury is microscopic, it can take time for pain to develop and be felt.
Sports massage is not just for people who take part in sports! It can be beneficial for people of all ages, regardless of occupation and lifestyle, and for all sorts of aches and pains, whether they are due to a sports injury or the general stresses of modern day living.
A massage and soft tissue manipulation, in conjunction with exercise advice and stretching can be of huge benefit to most people. Benefits include:
